Liberals, Conservatives and Statism

There is an interesting article recently in The New Republic discussing the American tradition of anti-statism, how it has been combated or defeated at various points in history, and why the left is not succeeding in that effort today. Liberals would be wise to look to history to see what has worked and what has not–from an ideological standpoint as well as a tactical one. And conservatives should look at history to see why their ideas about the state and the market have often proven wrong. Conservatism can certainly construct a viable intellectual alternative to traditional liberalism, but a simplistic laissez-faire attitude that blindly seeks ever smaller government, ever fewer regulations and ever lower taxes is not it. Not only is such an approach wrong on the facts, but it is going squarely against the tide of history, in America and in the world.
