A Secular Society Benefits Everybody

Secular society even benefits these people

Great post recently critical of traditional evangelicalism and supportive of a secular/ religiously neutral public square. It is not just secular people who can appreciate the virtues of a secular society and state. I like this quote:

Take politics for example. So many believers foam at the mouth when it comes to government intrusion into the church walls and church schools and families lives YET those same people rant and rave when it comes the government NOT making laws against abortion or gay marriage which are also personal issues. These people want to ban this, boycott that, and try and infuse Christian ideology into a clearly secular culture. They will lie and exaggerate the truth to try and get a “Christian” law passed, and then cry that they are being persecuted when someone slaps their hand and says no.

So here is a newsflash…..America IS NOT a Christian nation…

Amen. No pun intended.

If more “born againers” like Mark exercised their right to think, instead of letting someone else do their thinking for them, they just might see the wisdom in this! But don’t hold your breath.

No doubt, Lou. And if they weren’t so busy trying to force their quaint beliefs down our throats, they wouldn’t get such a harsh backlash from secularists and humanists and the like. Then, like the Amish, they could just live and let live.

As a more moderate believer (and yes, A certain guy named Lou in the internet once told me to F off), I have to say I agree. From a purely theological standpoint, those religious fundamentalists are actually apostate, in that tthe things they advocate, and the paths they choose to try to dominate the governance stand in stark contrast to what the Bible actually says. Point that out to them and they go nuts. Remind them that Jesus was actually a Jew who came to save the Jews of the day from themselves, and they turn white. Remind them that the Samaritan (who might be our modern day humanist) was more compassionate to his fellow man then the Jews, and they faint.

Point is you are exactly correct – and the sad irony to me is that the Founding Fathers, many of whom were men of faith, were deeply suspicious of just this sort of imposition.

Gee, Philip, sounds like the fundamentalists are single-handedly powering our healthcare industry! lol
